What Happens After the Initial Therapy Session?

Jul 28, 2026

A common question people have about therapy is, "What happens after the intake?"

The first session is typically focused on getting to know you—your history, what brought you to therapy, and what you hope to accomplish. But after that, therapy becomes much more personalized.

Each session is guided by your needs that week. Sometimes you'll arrive with something that's been weighing heavily on your mind and needs immediate attention. Other times, we'll continue processing topics from previous sessions, building on insights and progress we've already made. And sometimes, new patterns, challenges, or opportunities for growth naturally emerge as we talk.

My role is to hold space for you—a space where you can slow down, reflect, and explore your thoughts and emotions without judgment. Together, we'll make sense of your experiences, identify helpful patterns, develop practical coping strategies, and work toward the goals that are meaningful to you.

There isn't a strict agenda or a checklist you have to complete. Some sessions may feel deeply reflective, while others are more focused on problem-solving or learning new skills. Healing isn't linear, and therapy honors that.

Most importantly, you don't have to have everything figured out before you walk into a session. Whether you're celebrating a win, navigating a difficult week, or simply unsure where to begin, come as you are and we'll work through it together.

Therapy is a collaborative process, and you don't have to carry life's challenges alone. Week by week, session by session, we'll create a supportive space where growth, healing, and meaningful change can happen at a pace that feels right for you.
